So long awaited spring has arrived... Green grass - the beginning of buds on the trees - The braves first flowers peeking up out of the ground. Yesterday morning was gray - overcast - Chilly - but still spring... Right? About 10 A.M. I looked out the window to see snow falling - And it continued for the next four hours or so... Afternoon brought a chilly sun breaking through - Some Warmth grew towards day's end. April Weather with a split personality In Maine!

One recent, beautiful night I decided to wander outside, through the trees, in the dark, and see what "thing of beauty" I could find. I shot numerous photographs in the dark, using my cell phone for camera illumination and wishing for a headlight, but our batteries for those need replenishing.
Back in the house I decided to edit one of the shots. Naming it "Trees In The Dark", It was tweaked ,manipulated and given texture for an artistic effect.
This morning I decided to do more to the image. Given a border, reflection, intensified stars and some tweaking , it has a whole different look. Introducing "Reflection On Trees In The Dark" !
"Reflection On Trees In The Dark" is available as a print or on a variety of products. Availability can be viewed by clicking the photo above. Licensing options can be viewed at :

Lately I have enjoyed creating designs from photos I have taken. Recently our Burning Bush shrub caught my eye. It has been vivid flaming red in all its autumn splendor. I shot some photos of it after a brief rain shower.
Yesterday I wanted to create an design in which the photo image spiraled. I decided to use one of my photos of the burning bush.
After much manipulation this image was achieved :
Not yet satisfied, additional changes were made resulting in the final image :
Burning Bush Floral Design has the look of a quilted piece. The image is available on various products including being printed on stretched canvas, as a phone case, on a throw pillow or tote bag.

We have some chickens that can be amusing to watch. Recently I found them enjoying a dust bath under an old pine tree. "Chicken Dust Bath Party" captured that moment. I hope this photo adds some "Chicken Happiness" to your day!
Summer... I LOVE it! and add water to The equation... So much the better! In our area it is fairly common to see or hear loons... Just wonderful! I haven't yet gotten out the kayak this summer... Hopefully later this week! I live in Maine in an area virtually peppered with lakes and ponds. Here are some of my favorite shots from last summers explorations! One morning in July I was traveling the Ridge Road. In places water borders both sides of the wooded road. As I drove by Mosher Pond in Fayette a magical mist rose off the water and the sunlight coming over the hill behind the small island caused a wonderful glow. "Ridge Road Morning Mist" was shot that morning. The scene was pure magic. "Parker Pond Boat Landing" is a shot taken early one summer morning on Parker Pond in Vienna, Kennebec County, Maine. The pond is dotted with many small wooded islands bordered with high bush blueberries. If one is lucky loons, eagles, Canadian geese, turtles and hawks may be seen. One may also be confused to hear the distant roar of a lion due to a wildlife sanctuary which is across the hills several miles away. I love the peaceful morning beauty of the place. One misty, rainy morning I stopped to take pictures on Mosher Pond in Fayette, Maine. At one point ,while walking down to the water I came upon a number of Canada Geese resting on the shoreline...... they quickly scrambled into the water and began to swim to the center of the pond. They made for interesting images as they floated out into the rainy, gray distance. The photo "Canadian Geese", by Joy Nichols, has been edited with watercolor process and texture. Here is a selection of images taken while Kayaking : While kayaking on Parker Pond in Vienna, Maine early one August morning I caught the shot "Parker Morning". I was behind a skinny string of islands as the sun streamed over the hillside across the water and brightened the mist rising off the water. "Parker Morning" was edited with watercolor process and texture. it is quite rainy today, which is good to help gardens grow... But hopefully I can get that Kayak out soon!
When winter loses it's grip spring is so welcome. Springs first blossoms ... such a wonderful sight. While walking through a favorite patch of woods, where many Trillium grow , I came across many patches of blooming Sessile Bellwort, sometimes called Wild Oats . These little flowers are among the first to announce spring's arrival in the Maine woods. I especially love the Trillium... such a cheerful accent in a landscape which has not yet lost winter's grey, sprinkled across the pine-needled forest floor. Known as: red trillium, wake-robin, or stinking benjamin ... Close to home, bright blue crept up through the new grass The air became heavy with crab apple blossom and lilac perfume Time marches on... These blossoms have come and gone, others taking their place... Their sweet memory remains.
Last summer I stumbled upon a gorgeous little pond in Maine. Bees were buzzing, and the water was busy with frogs among the beautiful water lilies. Pink lotus blossoms were delightful.. Water LiliesI was so delighted to find a picturesque pond with a cluster of lotus flower lilies blooming and frogs that were happy to pose. This frog was particularly cooperative. One of the delights of a Maine summer's day! Frog Among the lily pads"Mystery Blue" is one of my most recent creations and I want to share part of the process. It all started with my image "Reflection Tree" : The image and its reverse were put together: And a mirror image added to it with a border: Two of these images were combined: A tiled image created: Numerous images are stacked on the large tiled image, borders applied and the color temperature tweaked to a stronger blue: Presenting "Mystery Blue"
Lately I've been "playing" with some of my nature shots and maneuvering the photos into a very different abstract design image. Take this "coastal rock" photograph for example: This photo was flipped upside down and to the side and four different images of it became : This image I doubled and embellished for the final outcome: I find it interesting how different the final image can be.
Late yesterday afternoon I saw patterns taking shape on some our windows...... Very faint fern patterns, but quite large...... I wondered how they would look in the morning after a cold night. Sure enough, this morning the "Jack Frost" artistry was delightful. "Frost Ferns" is a photo from this morning. I have uploaded this photo to be available for print on demand. The design is available as a pillow and a phone case as well.
